Move with the Mudgar
Mudgar has been used in traditional Indian Akharas and Kalaris for centuries, where wrestlers and Kalari Warriors used heavy wooden clubs to prepare their bodies for the demands of kushti and sword fight. As is the case with all combat sports, their training was not about isolating one muscle at a time. It involved swinging, turning, bracing and learning to control weight as it travelled around the body.
A Mudgar, also known as Mugdar or Mudgal, or Karlakattai in South India, remains useful for the same reason today. Its displaced weight placement sits away from your hand, so even a simple swing needs the grip, shoulders, trunk, and legs to work together.
Every Timba Mudgar is handcrafted in India from uncoated air-seasoned Acacia wood. It is turned individually on a lathe and finished with natural oil rather than chemical polish or varnish.
Since every log of wood is unique, small differences in grain, colour and texture are part of working with real wood, and part of what makes each Mudgar unique.
How does Mudgar training help?
Most gym equipment moves along a predictable path. A Mudgar does not.
Mudgar training is particularly useful for developing rotational strength, grip endurance, coordination and control through the shoulders and trunk.
It can be used for a focused strength session, as part of a warm-up, or alongside yoga, martial arts and conventional resistance training. And its something you can do at the comfort of your home.
If you are a beginner, start light. The goal is not to move the heaviest Mudgar. Linear strength and rotational strength are different.
Which Mudgar Weight is ideal for you?
If this is your first experience with circular or long-lever training, the 2 kg Mudgar is usually the ideal weight to start with. It gives you enough resistance to understand how the tool behaves while minimising the risk of injury.
The 3kg Mudgar is Timba’s most loved Mudgar. With its unique taper design, it brings a beautiful swing dynamic. This weight is ideal for practitioners who already have some experience with strength training, Kettlebells, Indian Clubs, or Movement practice and want a more demanding session without losing control of the swing.
The 5kg Mudgar is intended for experienced practitioners who have already developed sound technique. The additional weight increases the demand on the grip, shoulders and trunk, so it should be treated as a progression, not a starting point.
Body weight and gym experience alone do not determine the right choice. Your shoulder control, coordination and familiarity with swinging tools matter more impotant.
What's the difference between Mudgar, Indian Clubs or Gada?
These traditional tools belong to the same broad family, but they do not feel the same in practice.
Indian Clubs are lighter and are commonly used in pairs for rhythm, coordination and shoulder movement.
While a mudgar is heavier, with a more balanced weight distribution due to the cylindercial shape. It places greater emphasis on strength and control.
A gada has most of its weight towards the globe at the end of a longer handle, creating a different kind of leverage and rotational demand.
Recommended way to start: Indian Clubs, then Medium Weight Mudgar, then Medium weight Gada, then heavier Mudgar or Gada.
Build a Broader Practice with Timba Kits
If you would like to train with more than one tool, Timba’s kits bring together equipment that complements the mudgar.
The Strength Kit 2 combines a 2kg Mudgar with a pair of 1kg Indian Clubs, making it a practical introduction to both strength and coordinated club movement. The Strength Kit 1 pairs a 3kg Mudgar with 1kg Indian Clubs for a more demanding practice.
The Yoga Kit, Kohlapuri Kit and Full Body Kit combine different Timba tools for people who want to explore mobility, balance and whole-body movement alongside rotational strength.
Each kit includes the relevant equipment, a natural oil care kit and access to guided training support.
